When Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need of a physician, but those who are sick do. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Mark 2:17
Leviticus 4-5
Leviticus 4
Laws for Sin Offerings
1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the Israelites, saying, ‘If anyone sins unintentionally, in any of the things which the Lord has commanded not to be done, and does any one of them, 3 if the anointed priest sins so as to bring guilt on the people, then let him offer for his sin which he has committed, a young bull without defect, to the Lord as a sin offering. 4 He shall bring the bull to the door of the Tent of Meeting before the Lord, and he shall lay his hand on the head of the bull and kill the bull before the Lord.
5 The anointed priest shall take some of the blood of the bull and bring it to the Tent of Meeting. 6 The priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before the Lord, before the veil of the sanctuary. 7 The priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of sweet incense before the Lord, which is in the Tent of Meeting, and he shall pour out the rest of the blood of the bull at the base of the altar of burnt offering, which is at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
8 He shall remove all of the fat of the bull for the sin offering: the fat that covers the internal organs and all the fat that is on the internal organs, 9 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the loins, and the cover on the liver, with the kidneys, he shall remove, 10 as it is removed from the bull of the sacrifice of peace offerings. The priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering. 11 He shall carry the bull’s skin, all its meat, with its head, and with its legs, its internal organs, and its dung 12 —all the rest of the bull—outside of the camp to a clean place where the ashes are poured out and burn it on wood with fire. It shall be burned where the ashes are poured out.
13 If the whole community of Israel sins, and the matter is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done any of the things which the Lord has commanded not to be done, and are guilty; 14 when the sin which they committed is known, then the assembly shall offer a young bull as a sin offering and bring it before the Tent of Meeting. 15 The elders of the congregation shall lay their hands on the head of the bull before the Lord, and the bull shall be killed before the Lord.
16 The anointed priest shall bring some of the blood of the bull to the Tent of Meeting. 17 The priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord, before the veil. 18 He shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar which is before the Lord, that is in the Tent of Meeting; and the rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering, which is at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
19 He shall remove all its fat from it and burn it on the altar. 20 Thus shall he do with the bull, as he did with the bull of the sin offering, so shall he do with this, and the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven. 21 He shall carry the bull outside the camp, and burn it as he burned the first bull. It is the sin offering for the assembly.
22 When a leader sins and unwittingly does any one of all the things which the Lord his God has commanded not to be done and is guilty, 23 if his sin which he has committed is made known to him, he shall bring as his offering, a male goat without defect.
24 He shall lay his hand on the head of the goat and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before the Lord. It is a sin offering. 25 The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering. He shall pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering. 26 He shall burn all of its fat on the altar, like the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings, and the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin, and he will be forgiven.
27 If anyone of the common people sins unwittingly, in doing any of the things which the Lord has commanded not to be done and is guilty, 28 if his sin which he has committed is made known to him, then he shall bring for his offering, a goat, a female goat without defect, for his sin which he has committed.
29 He shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill the sin offering at the place of the burnt offering. 30 The priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and the rest of its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar.
31 All its fat he shall take away, like the fat is taken away from the sacrifice of peace offerings, and the priest shall burn it on the altar as a pleasant aroma to the Lord, and the priest shall make atonement for him, and he will be forgiven.
32 If he brings a lamb as his offering for a sin offering, he shall bring a female without defect. 33 He shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill it as a sin offering at the place where they kill the burnt offering. 34 The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and all the rest of its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar.
35 He shall remove all its fat, like the fat of the lamb is removed from the sacrifice of peace offerings. The priest shall burn them on the altar, on the offerings of the Lord made by fire. The priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin that he has committed, and he will be forgiven.”
Leviticus 5
Sins Requiring a Sin Offering
1 “If anyone sins, in that he hears an oath spoken and is a witness and is asked whether he has seen or known of this oath, if he does not report it, then he must bear his guilt.
2 Or if anyone touches any unclean thing, whether it is the carcass of an unclean animal or the carcass of unclean livestock or the carcass of unclean creeping things, and he is unaware of it, he also is unclean and is guilty.
3 Or if he touches the uncleanness of a human being, whatever his uncleanness is that made him unclean, and he is aware of it, when he knows of it, then he is guilty.
4 Or if anyone swears rashly whether to do evil or to do good—whatever it is that a man might utter rashly with an oath, and he is unaware of it—when he knows of it, then he will be guilty, in whichever one of these it is.
5 It must be, when he is guilty of one of these, he must confess that which he has sinned, 6 and he must bring his trespass offering to the Lord for his sin which he has committed: a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin offering, and the priest must make atonement for him concerning his sin.
7 If he cannot afford a lamb, then he must bring his trespass offering for that which he has sinned, two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, to the Lord, one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering.
8 He must bring them to the priest, who must first offer the one which is for the sin offering. He must wring off its head from its neck but must not sever it completely. 9 He must sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering on the side of the altar, and the rest of the blood must be drained out at the base of the altar. It is a sin offering. 10 He must offer the second as a burnt offering, according to the ordinance, and the priest must make atonement for him concerning the sin which he has committed, and he must be forgiven.
11 But if he cannot afford two turtledoves or two young pigeons, then he must bring as his offering for the sin which he committed, two quarts of fine flour for a sin offering. He must put no oil on it, and he must not put any frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering.
12 He must bring it to the priest, and the priest must take his handful of it as the memorial portion and burn it on the altar, on the offerings of the Lord made by fire. It is a sin offering. 13 The priest must make atonement for him concerning the sin that he has committed in any of these things, and he will be forgiven, and the rest must be the priest’s, as the grain offering.
14 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 15 “If anyone commits a trespass and sins unwittingly regarding the Lord’s holy things, then he must bring his trespass offering to the Lord: a ram without defect from the flock, according to your estimation in silver by shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, as a trespass offering. 16 He must make restitution for that which he has done wrong regarding the holy thing and must add twenty percent to it and give it to the priest, and the priest must make atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and he will be forgiven.
17 If anyone sins, doing any of the things which the Lord has commanded not to be done, although he was unaware of it, he is still guilty and must bear his iniquity. 18 He must bring a ram without defect from of the flock, according to your estimation, as a trespass offering, to the priest, and the priest must make atonement for him concerning the sin which he unwittingly committed, and he will be forgiven. 19 It is a trespass offering. He is certainly guilty before the Lord.”
Mark 2:13-3:6
Jesus Calls Levi
13 Jesus went out again by the seaside. All the multitude came to him, and he taught them.
14 As he passed by, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he arose and followed him.
Dining with Sinners
15 While Jesus was reclining at the table in Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners sat down with him and his disciples, for there were many, and they followed him. 16 The scribes and the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why is it that he eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?”
17 When Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need of a physician, but those who are sick do. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
Jesus Questioned about Fasting
18 John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and asked him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”
19 Jesus said to them, “Can the groomsmen fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.
The Patches and Wineskins
21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, or else the patch shrinks, and the new tears away from the old, and a worse hole is made. 22 No one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and the wine will pour out, and the skins will be destroyed; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins.”
The Lord of the Sabbath
23 He was going through the grain fields on the Sabbath day, and his disciples began to pluck the ears of grain as they went.
24 The Pharisees said to him, “Why do they do that which is not lawful on the Sabbath day?”
25 He said to them, “Did you never read what David did, when he had need and was hungry—he and those who were with him? 26 How he entered into the house of God at the time of Abiathar the high priest and ate the show bread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests and gave also to those who were with him?”
27 He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 Therefore the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
Mark 3
Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
1 Jesus entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man there who had his hand withered. 2 They watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day, that they might accuse him. 3 He said to the man whose hand was withered, “Stand up.”
4 He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath day to do good or to do harm? To save a life or to kill?” But they were silent.
5 When he had looked around at them with anger, grieved at the hardness of their hearts, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored as healthy as the other.
6 The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, as to how they might destroy him.
Psalm 36
The Transgression of the Wicked
For the Chief Musician. By David, the servant of the Lord.
1 A revelation is within my heart
about the disobedience of the wicked:
There is no fear of God before his eyes.
2 For he flatters himself in his own eyes,
too much to detect and hate his sin.
3 The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit.
He has ceased to be wise and to do good.
4 He plots iniquity on his bed.
He sets himself in a way that is not good.
He does not abhor evil.
5 Your loving kindness, O Lord, reaches the heavens.
Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
6 Your righteousness is like the great mountains.
Your judgments are like the deepest sea.
O Lord, you preserve man and animal.
7 How precious is your loving kindness, O God!
The children of men take refuge under the shadow of your wings.
8 They shall be fully satisfied with the abundance of your house,
and you shall make them drink from the river of your pleasures.
9 For with you is the fountain of life.
In your light we shall see light.
10 Oh continue your loving kindness to those who know you,
your righteousness to the upright in heart.
11 Let not the foot of pride come against me.
Let not the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12 There the workers of iniquity are fallen.
They are cast down and shall not be able to rise.
Proverbs 10:1-2
The proverbs of Solomon.
1 A wise son brings joy to his father,
but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.
2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing,
but righteousness delivers from death.
