Forty-Two Legs of a Journey

1 This is a record of the Israelites’ journey, under the direction of Moses and Aaron, when their army divisions went out of the land of Egypt. 2 At the Lord’s command, Moses recorded the starting points of their travel. This was their route, by starting points:

3 The Israelites departed from Rameses on the fifteenth day of the first month, the day after the Passover, marching in triumph in the sight of all the Egyptians, 4 while the Egyptians were still burying all of their firstborn whom the Lord had struck down among them. The Lord also executed judgments on their gods.

Canaanites Conquered

50 The Lord spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho and said, 51 Speak to the Israelites and tell them, “When you cross over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 52 you must drive out all of the inhabitants of the land before you. Destroy all their stone idols, destroy all their molten images, and demolish all their pagan alters.

53 Take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have given the land to you to possess. 54 Distribute the land among the families of Israel by lot and in proportion to the number of people in each family; larger tracts of land for larger families and smaller tracts of land for smaller families. The location of the tracts of land will be based on lot, and the amount of land will be based on the number of people in your family.

55 If you do not drive out all of the inhabitants of the land, then those you allow to remain will be like splinters in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will harass you in the land where you live, 56 and I will do to you as I had planned to do to them.”
